Jun 4, , Peg, what you are calling a footvalve is almost certainly a checkvalve. The footvalve would be at the bottom of the well. Having a bladder tank is OK, but is frequently not needed IF all you are doing is running some sprinklers. The key is this: Have the proper number of sprinklers to keep from having the pressure get too high or too low. If it seems to get too high, and you can’t remedy it by adding sprinklers, then you might want to look at a pressure tank and switch to control the pressure.
I was hoping a bladder tank wasn’t needed but got desperate yesterday and bought a 2 gallon one. Doing a lot better. I only have one sprinkler so far haven’t done the dream irrigation yet.

How To Check The Bladder In Your Well Pressure Tank Checking the bladder in your well tank is important if your well pump is running frequently with only a small amount of water being used. The well tank is used to store water for use between pumping cycles. When the well pressure tank is not working properly the pump will run frequently on short cycles and burn out. There are two basic types of well pressure tanks, which you may find in your home, the first being a tank, which does not have a bladder and the second, which has a bladder.

To my utter dismay, they no longer made a pump that would fit this type of well. I could either salvage a manual pump from an old well a complicated assembly with a push rod and leathers or come up with my own design. Thus, the inertia pump was born of necessity. Step One – Well Preparation Before installing any pump, clear the well of all grit, sand or dirt, and ensure that the water flows clear. Use a scaffolding or derrick above the well casing and a winch to lower the pipe. Lower the assembly into the well, foot valve first, until the top of the pipe is at the top of the well casing.
Attach the next section of pipe to the initial pipe and lower the assembly into the well until the top of the pipe is again at the top of the well casing. Repeat this process of attaching pipe and lowering the assembly until the proper operating depth is reached. Lower the assembly into the well, foot valve first, until the jet assembly is at the top of the well casing.
Attach both the suction pipe and the driver pipe to the jet assembly. If a tail pipe is not required, attach the foot valve to the bottom of the jet assembly with a close nipple. Lower the assembly into the well until the top of the pipe is at the top of the well casing. Repeat this process of attaching pipe and lowering the assembly into the well casing until the proper operating depth is reached.

Insure that you have all of the parts required for a proper installation. See component lists for different system types. Check power supply voltage and select motor voltage. The 2 hp motors and above operate only on volts. Select a site where the pump and tank will not freeze.
If the jet is located in the pump itself, it is known as a shallow well pump and will lift water up to about 25 feet. If the jet is located down in the well below the water level, then it is a deep well pump and can lift water between 25 and feet when installed properly.
