The religious beliefs and practices of the ancient Celts CELTS Among the ancient European peoples were the warlike Celts–muscular, light-haired wanderers who probably came from the distant steppes beyond the Caspian Sea. The Celts, who were also called Gauls, continued to migrate in all directions. After capturing the fertile Po Valley region, they laid siege to Rome. To what is now France they gave the ancient name of Gaul. In Asia Minor they founded the kingdom of Galatia. In Britain, Celtic warriors overran and conquered the islands. The oldest archaeological evidence of the Celts comes from Hallstatt, Austria, near Salzburg. Excavated graves of chieftains there, dating from about BC, exhibit an Iron Age culture one of the first in Europe , which received in Greek trade such luxury items as bronze and pottery vessels. In their westward movement the Hallstatt warriors overran Celtic peoples of their own kind, incidentally introducing the use of iron, one of the reasons for their own overlordship. For the centuries after the establishment of trade with the Greeks, the archaeology of the Celts can be followed with greater precision.

Mar 08, Skip Burzumato Struggling to understand modern dating conventions? Maybe it’s because those before us have given us more than one dating system to draw from. Where did it come from? How did it become such an important part of our courtship system? And where are we today? According to cultural historian Beth Bailey, the word date was probably originally used as a lower-class slang word for booking an appointment with a prostitute. However, by the turn of the 20th century we find the word being used to describe lower-class men and women going out socially to public dances, parties and other meeting places, primarily in urban centers where women had to share small apartments and did not have spacious front parlors in their homes to which to invite men to call.

With the rise of the entertainment culture, with its movie houses and dance halls and their universal appeal across class lines, dating quickly moved up the socio-economic ladder to include middle- and upper-class men and women, as well as the new urbanites. When one tries to understand how dating has changed over time, and most importantly, how we arrived at the system of courtship and dating we have today, one must realize the monumental cultural shift that occurred during the s, primarily due to World War II.

The courtship experience and ideals of those who grew up before World War II were profoundly different from those of teenagers in the postwar years, and the differences created much intergenerational conflict. The Decline of American Courtship, before World War II, American youth prized what Bailey calls a promiscuous popularity, demonstrated through the number and variety of dates a young adult could command, sometimes even on the same night.

In the late s, Margaret Mead, in describing this pre-war dating system, argued that dating was not about sex or marriage.

Syllabub Syllabub belongs to the English family of creamy dessert beverages combining dairy products and sweet wine. Originally a holiday beverage, syllabub invited many interesting variations based on viscosity and application. Dessert syllabubs , akin to trifle, flourished in the early 20th century. Its defining characteristic is the mixing of white wine or cider or fruit juice with sweetened cream, so curdling the cream, but from earliest times it has diverged into two basic types: The former was made with thicker cream, often reinforced by beaten egg whites, the latter with single cream or even milk, sometimes introduced directly from the cow’s udder into a bowl containing the wine and other ingredients.

Both sorts remained very popular until the mid-nineteenth century

The history of dating is based on old-fashioned courtship, which itself developed in a variety of ways from the traditional arranged marriages of much of human history. To court means to woo and to woo means to seek the love of another with marriage in mind.

Rail operators enable the efficient flow of goods from producers to consumers, and are therefore a vital part of the broad economy. With roots dating back to the s, moving freight by rail is an old-line business that remains capital-intensive and cyclical. Within North America, the industry is dominated by a handful of large operators, while countless short-line railroads provide regional and local service. Very few of the publicly held railroads are involved in ferrying passengers.

However, they do generate certain noncore revenue and income streams, be it from haulage agreements track usage fees or railcar switching for industrial customers. Underpinned by the economic expansion that peaked in late , the railroads produced enviable profit growth and above-average investment returns. Consistent gains led many to posit that the industry had entered a period of sustainable growth.

With that in mind, patient investors, willing to maintain positions throughout the economic cycle, may continue to enjoy positive returns within the sector, especially as these companies focus on improving normalized earnings and the efficiency of operations. At the same time, novice and sophisticated investors alike are urged to survey the greater economic climate before committing funds.

Industry Dynamics The railroads are part of a broader freight-hauling industry that includes truckers, barge operators, and air transporters.

Restaurant menus, as we know them today, are a relatively new phenomenon. Food historians tell us they were a “byproduct” of the French Revolution. In the 20th century children’s menus take their place at the table. Before the emergence of the restaurant, a menu had always been a list of all those foods to be served during a particular meal as at a banquet today. Cookbooks recommended them and chefs in wealthy households composed them, but all the items on the menu were brought to the table in the course of the meal.

Duration[ edit ] The average duration of courtship varies considerably throughout the world. Furthermore, there is vast individual variation between couples. Courtship may be completely omitted, as in cases of some arranged marriages where the couple do not meet before the wedding. In the United Kingdom , a poll of 3, [1] engaged or married couples resulted in an average duration between first meeting and accepted proposal of marriage of 2 years and 11 months, [1] [2] with the women feeling ready to accept at an average of 2 years and 7 months.

The date is fairly casual in most European-influenced cultures, but in some traditional societies, courtship is a highly structured activity, with very specific formal rules. In some societies, the parents or community propose potential partners and then allow limited dating to determine whether the parties are suited. Courtship in the Philippines is one known complex form of courtship. Unlike what is regularly seen in other societies, it takes a far more subdued and indirect approach. It is common to see the male showing off by sending love letters and love poems, singing romantic songs, and buying gifts for the female.

Abstract Hysteria is undoubtedly the first mental disorder attributable to women, accurately described in the second millennium BC, and until Freud considered an exclusively female disease. Over years of history, this disease was considered from two perspectives: It was cured with herbs, sex or sexual abstinence, punished and purified with fire for its association with sorcery and finally, clinically studied as a disease and treated with innovative therapies.

However, even at the end of 19th century, scientific innovation had still not reached some places, where the only known therapies were those proposed by Galen. During the 20th century several studies postulated the decline of hysteria amongst occidental patients both women and men and the escalating of this disorder in non-Western countries. Ancient Egypt The first mental disorder attributable to women, and for which we find an accurate description since the second millennium BC, is undoubtedly hysteria.

Allured The following article is reprinted with permission from the Spring issue of Gateway Heritage , vol. In the mid s, one of the few female physicians in the United States argued that women, unlike men, were natural healers. In most nineteenth-century communities, female healers performed almost all of the tasks that professionally trained doctors, nurses, and pharmacists later assumed. As regular physicians became more prevalent, and medical training became more scientific, domestic medicine fell into disrepute.

By , academically trained physicians were dismissing traditional female healing practices as irrational and superstitious, ineffective at best and dangerous at worst. However, a historical look at folk healing tells a different story. Far from being random or illogical, domestic medicine was based on empirical evidence, rational calculation, and the time-honored method of trial and error.

Before the widespread use of antibiotics, the holistic care practiced in the home by female healers was as effective as almost anything contemporary physicians had to offer. As one resident of Taney County, Missouri, remembered: The nearest doctor was 20 miles away and there was no way to travel only horseback and no money to pay with if he did come. Mother watched over us carefully. In the spring she would make sassafras and sage tea to condition our blood.

In the summer and autumn we would eat.

As the gender roles became more pronounced throughout much of the s, more formality was brought to dating and courtship. During this period, rings were first introduced as a formal way of asking for a woman’s hand in marriage, as well as asking parents for permission.

The word yoga was first mentioned in the oldest sacred texts, the Rig Veda. The Vedas were a collection of texts containing songs, mantras and rituals to be used by Brahmans, the Vedic priests. Yoga was slowly refined and developed by the Brahmans and Rishis mystic seers who documented their practices and beliefs in the Upanishads, a huge work containing over scriptures.

The Upanishads took the idea of ritual sacrifice from the Vedas and internalized it, teaching the sacrifice of the ego through self-knowledge, action karma yoga and wisdom jnana yoga. Classical Yoga In the pre-classical stage, yoga was a mishmash of various ideas, beliefs and techniques that often conflicted and contradicted each other. Written some time in the second century, this text describes the path of Raja Yoga, often called “classical yoga”. Patanjali organized the practice of yoga into an “eight limbed path” containing the steps and stages towards obtaining Samadhi or enlightenment.

Post-Classical Yoga A few centuries after Patanjali, yoga masters created a system of practices designed to rejuvenate the body and prolong life. They rejected the teachings of the ancient Vedas and embraced the physical body as the means to achieve enlightenment. They developed Tantra Yoga, with radical techniques to cleanse the body and mind to break the knots that bind us to our physical existence.

This exploration of these physical-spiritual connections and body centered practices led to the creation of what we primarily think of yoga in the West: Modern Period In the late s and early s, yoga masters began to travel to the West, attracting attention and followers. In the s and 30s, Hatha Yoga was strongly promoted in India with the work of T. Krishnamacharya, Swami Sivananda and other yogis practicing Hatha Yoga.
