Kenya[ edit ] Polygynous marriage was preferred among the Logoli and other Abalulya sub ethnic groups. Taking additional wives was regarded as one of the fundamental indicators of a successfully established man. Large families enhanced the prestige of Logoli men. Logoli men with large families were also capable of obtaining justice, as they would be feared by people, who would not dare to use force to take their livestock or other goods from them.
Interviews with some of the contemporary Logoli men and women who recently made polygynous marriages yielded data which suggest that marrying another wife is usually approached with considerable thought and deliberation by the man.

There was no in between. Satan is a jerk? I left my room without thinking to pray? Yeah, probably all of those combined into a big mess. Weekly family home evening, daily family prayer and scripture study, early-morning seminary were the norm. Growing up, her father, now President of LDS Business College, served as a bishop, a member of the stake presidency, and a high councilman. They were angry and hurt, which just fueled my fire even more.
Can you tell me about the basics of dating and courtship for Mormons? Basic information on this topic is provided in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism , Vol. Members of the Church are somewhat distinctive in their dating and courtship practices, but they are also influenced by broader cultural patterns. In some cultures, parents still closely supervise courtship and arrange children’s marriages, but youth worldwide have increasing choices in dating and mate selection.
For most young people in the United States outside the Church, dating begins at an early age about age thirteen during the s ; it has no set pattern of progression, and is often informal and unsupervised.

Girls will get me in trouble. Girls will keep me from being able to go on a mission. Robinson said that people in the church need to help the youth to not only prepare for missions, but for eternal marriage as well — and that begins with dating. When you begin dating, go with one or more additional couples. Avoid going on frequent dates with the same person. Developing serious relationships too early in life can limit the number of other people you meet and can perhaps lead to immorality.
Robinson said something changed with his generation. Even though return missionaries learn about being rejected for their whole missions, it still hurts. But Robinson brought up a good point in our interview.

How long have you been dating? Two days later I met my future husband. Two days after that, he asked me out. Five months later we were engaged. Three months after that we were married. Yeah, it happened pretty quickly.
I will freely admit that I was a member of one of those sites some years ago. I have forgotten which one. I had very nice email correspondences with some very nice women, and one very unhappy experience meeting someone face-to-face.
Lynn Wilder was a confident, Mormon professor at Brigham Young University who had special privileges to enter all Mormon temples and even served in a Mormon temple for 10 years. She has since renounced her former faith. Around this time, her son Micah called home from his two-year Latter Day Saints LDS mission trip and said that church leaders were threatening to ex-communicate him. He had read the Bible on his own, embraced biblical Christianity, and announced it during his parting testimony.
This not only prompted his leaders to accuse him of being filled with the spirit of Satan; it prompted his family to reread the New Testament with fresh eyes. She and Michael started a ministry to former Mormons and have written two books, Unveiling Grace: Lynn took the time to talk with us about things like the difference between Mormonism and Christianity, why Mormons are so nice, and what goes on in temple rituals. Some folks think Mormonism is just a slight variation from orthodox Christianity.
Can you briefly describe three central ways that Mormon beliefs are different from orthodox Christianity? My top three stark differences are: Mormonism teaches the only way to eternal life with our heavenly Father is to join Mormonism and faithfully attend Mormon temples. Temple-worthiness requires good works: There is nothing we can do to add to what Jesus did on the cross. The Mormon godhead is neither omniscient, omnipresent, nor omnipotent.

I decided to give the YSA ward a thorough sweep of eligible young men. I began chatting with a nice enough fellow, who told me he had a great job with a company downtown. He seemed qualified enough and was my age. So we arranged a date. I tried to put him off but he was persistent we go out. We planned on meeting down by the mall. I texted him prior to leaving so we could arrive at the same time. I waited, and waited and waited. I shook it off only mildly annoyed.
When I met up with him, forget that I was wearing my sweats, and had taken no effort on my appearance, but his outfit blew me away. It was quite unusual. It was peak dinner hours, so I followed behind him in my car from restaurant to restaurant trying to find a place for us to park. The 3rd restaurant a had near empty lot so we went inside.

Why do some women feel unequal in the church? While this was not an exhaustive list, it made apparent many of the gender disparities that we often take for granted. Another way to make inequality apparent is to talk about privilege. An important step in lessening, mitigating and ending this discrimination is acknowledging it.
Dating is probably one of the most common questions people have about Mormons—especially if you’re interested in dating one! Mormon teenagers are instructed not to date until they are at least 16 years old, and then are encouraged to avoid dating the same person too seriously.
If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading that post HERE , because dating a variety of people in groups as casual friends is not the “norm” in many areas, so this can be a tough issue for many LDS youth. My post “4 Group Date Ideas for LDS Teens” has some great ideas for helping youth to date according to the standards that the living Prophets have set, and here are some more Here are 12 ideas that are low-cost, fun, and casual!
Some of these ideas could be used any time of year, and some of them are season-specific. Any of these date activities could be for double-dates two couples or larger groups. This is even better. A group sits around a table with a deck of cards, passing the cards and trying to get a set of four. Once someone gets a set of four they grab a spoon that sits in the middle of the table. However, there is one less spoon than people at the table…so the last one to grab is out! So once you get a set of four you jump up and run to grab a spoon, with lots of people close behind you!

Rethinking the Judicial Decision – Dan Vogel Urim and Thummim Some accounts refer to the seer stones as a pair of stones set in eye frames to resemble spectacles Joseph himself writing in his own hand, …the Lord had prepared spectticke spectacles for to read the Book therefore I commenced translating the characters… History, circa Summer , The Joseph Smith Papers. Other accounts refer to a single seer stone by itself, such as this one by Emma Smith, saying that the translating process had Joseph sitting with his face buried in his hat, with the stone in it, and dictating hour after hour with nothing between us… Emma Smith Bidamon Interview with Joseph Smith III, February Published as “Last Testimony of Sister Emma,” Saints’ Herald 26 1 October Apparently the spectacle version was with the plates in the stone box.
Some accounts state that they were only used for translating just the first pages of the Book of Mormon and were then taken from Joseph by the angel along with the plates, although there is no direct evidence that Joseph used the spectacle version of the Urim and Thummim for translating even the first pages of the BOM. The accounts were reported in some newspapers but the reporters likely confused the spectacle version with the seer stone version as many Latter-day Saints did.
The angel returned the plates but not the spectacle “Urim and Thummim”. After this, Joseph used the single seer stone that he had in his possession from before the Book of Mormon plates were retrieved. However, Oliver Cowdery, who was scribe for nearly all of the Book of Mormon except the lost pages only gives account of the Urim and Thummim which he always equates with the “Nephite Interpreters.
See the section immediately below titled, “Seer stone, spectacles, interpreters and Urim and Thummim confusion,” for more problems. We know of no historian or Biblical scholar who claims that the Biblical Urim and Thummim had anything to do with “translating languages,” or that they resembled “giant spectacles” as BOM witnesses claimed.
Maybe the term “Urim and Thummim” gave the seer stone an air of Biblical authority to it so perhaps that’s why people started using that term after The idea that the “spectacle” version of the Urim and Thummim was larger than a man would use may have come from the prevalent belief that the ancient inhabitants of America were large people based on bones found in some mounds. When Joseph used the spectacles in conjunction with the plates, it was behind a curtain to shield the plates from view.
